Narrative
The Jewish religious feast of Succos utilizes the Four Species (Arba Minim), which include specific plant parts of the Esrog (citron), Lulav (date palm), Hadassim (myrtle), and Aravos (willow). The specific characteristics of the plant parts utilized must conform to the established criteria (Margolin, 2003). Regarding the date palm, the tip of emerging leaves are utilized. Of varieties maintained by NCGRCD, there are three that apparently come closest to meeting the criteria: 'Bentamoda', 'Dayri', and 'Jarvis #1' (a male selection) (A. Horowitz, personal communication, ca 2004). With the goal of producing a selection with superior characteristics in this regard, the female varieties noted were pollinated with pollen from 'Jarvis #1'. The seedlings will be grown out and the morphology of the emergin leaves observed to see if they conform to the criteria for use in Succos. Since this cross was made for a specific purpose, it is not planned to maintain it as a part of the NCGRCD accessions. This decision may be modified in the future if the selection warrants maintenance. (RRK, 10/2007)
