Narrative
'Barhee' originated in southern Iraq. Its name was associated with the hot summer winds ("barh") at Basra, which were supposed to have an effect on the maturity of the fruit (P Popenoe, 1913: Date Growing in the Old world and the New. Altadena, California).'Barhee' fruit is of high quality. It is a low-astringency variety and is consumed at the khalal stage. In the later stages of maturity, it has an excellent, delicate flavor that is highly esteemed in both Iraq and the United States. Although it cures and stores well, this distinctive flavor tends to disappear when stored. The fruit is slightly tender for shipping. The fruit shape is distinctive, being broadly ovate to nearly round with an abrupt, wedge-shaped taper from the middle to the bluntly pointed apex. Color is yellow at khalal, adarkening to reddish amber in the later stages. The trees are robust. 'Barhee' is somewhat increasing in importance commercially world-wide due to its extensive propagation by tissue culture. (Information from various sources, notably RW Nixon. 1950. Imported Varieties of Dates in the United States. USDA Circ No 834) It is not known how this accession differs from the other 'Barhee' accession at NCGRCD (PI 8746). Since there was apparently only one introduction, they should be identical or at least very similar. (RRK, 10/2006)
