Narrative
''These seedlings, planted at Brawley, were produced through controlled hand pollination of the one female and two male trees at Indio. P sylvestris does not produce offshoots; several seedlings must be raised so that eventually male and female plants of each cross may be selected. P sylvestris is important because its pollen produces large fruit when used to fertilize Deglet Noor flowers. It was perhaps the most interesting pollen used in the metaxenia studies." (JB Carpenter, ca 1981). Some visitors (D Johnson, D Hodel) have stated that the trunks on these are thicker than those observed elsewhere. This might be natural variation as all P sylvestris are hybrids; much variation observed in India, 02/1996. (RRK, 09/2006)
