Comment: High Plains Selected Class germplasm bluegrass is a composite of 3 accessions; 9019193 collected 6/22/80 near Casper, WY (Natrona County), 9019198 collected 7/17/80 near Granger, WY (Uinta County), and 9026084 collected in 1983 near Gillette, WY(Campbell County). The 3 accessions were combined in equal amounts to establish seed production fields to produce G1 seed for distribution to commercial growers. This pre-varietal release was made in 2000 from the Bridger PMC.

Narrative
High Plains Germplasm bluegrass is typical of northern latitude strains of this species. The overall stature is somewhat shorter than those found in foothills (seldom exceeds 60 cm) and mountains of western Montana/northern Idaho and in the Palouse of eastern Washington. Sandberg bluegrass is a cool-season, bunchgrass that matures early in the summer, remaining cured and somewhat inconspicuous the remainder of the growing season. The plants occur as small tufts, with soft basal leaves and few to many flowering stalks that are naked except for two small leaves. This species of bluegrass has a prominent membranaceous acute ligule. The seeds are glaucous except for short, crisp hairs on the lower portion of the lemmas. The processed seed of High Plains has approximately 2000 seeds per gram. High Plains germplasm originated from the semi-arid high plains of Wyoming. This species has extensive, deep penetrating, coarse, fibrous roots that make it quite drought tolerant and resistant to grazing and trampling. It is considered a pioneer species, one of the first species to establish on surface-manipulated rangeland.
