Narrative
Foothills germplasm of Canada bluegrass is morphologically typical of the species. Although of Eurasian origin, this species has naturalized over extensive portions of the northern United States and southern Canada. This species is often confused with Kentucky bluegrass, but has a distinct blue-green foliage, flattened wiry stems, and short, semi-compact panicles. There are few basal leaves, while the culm leaves are short and erect. Unlike Kentucky bluegrass, the rhizomatous Canada bluegrass does not form a tight sod and regrowth is quite slow following clipping or grazing. The seeds have a strongly keeled lemma with sparse webbing at the base and slight pubescence toward the base of the keel and margin nerves. This species is considered apomictic; producing seed asexually. It has approximately 3,520 seeds per gram. Seed maturity and harvest dates range from the first week in August to the first week in September in south-central Montana.

Description:
Foothills Selected Class Germplasm Canada bluegrass is a composite of 8 accessions; 9010409 & 9010410 from Denmark, 9011549 from Romania, 9012567 & 9012568 from the US, 9014659 from the Netherlands, 90184468 from Czechoslovakia, and 9021278 from former USSR. An equal amount of seed of all 8 accessions was used to establish seed production fields that yield G1 seed for distribution. Growers are allowed to grow 2 generations, G2 and G3. The release was made in 2001 by the Bridger PMC.
