Narrative
Butterfly milkweed is a long lived, perennial forb in the milkweed family with a showy orange flower blooming late spring to September. This plant has 3 inch long seedpods with little white puffs of down attached to each seed. It has a large taproot and grows well on dry, well-drained, infertile soil. The genus Ascelepia is the sole food plants for monarch butterfly larvae. Butterfly milkweed can be utilized in landscape and restoration plantings on drier sites, meadows and roadsides.
