Narrative
Trailing wildbean is a native warm season annual legume with twining or trailing stems. Leaves are pinnately trifoliate and leaflets ovate to ovate-oblong and 3 lobes. Flowers are purplish. Seed pods are 4-9 cm long and seeds are persistently woolly due to fragments of the inner pod adhering to the seed. Removal of the wooly cover exposes a black, shiny seed. Trailing wildbean occurs in open woodlands, abandoned cropland and coastal dune. Hopefield was selected to provide an adapted trailing wildbean for inclusion in critical area erosion control mixtures and wildlife food and cover in AR, LA, MS, AL, and western TN.

Description:
Seed of Hopefield selection was collected October 1980 southeast of Marion, AR in major land resource area 131 and plant hardiness Zone 7. Hopefield selection was assigned NRCS # 9021719. It was one of 10 accessions selected from an initial evaluation planting of 32 accessions on the basis of plant vigor. Seed traits were also used to support the selection of 5 accessions for potential release.
