Locality: Numerous samples originally acquired from native prairie remnants within the northern section of three tiers of counties located in Iowa. A total of 20 sites were sampled representing 13 counties including Cerro Gordo (3 sites), Kossuth (2 sites), Palo Alto, Emmett (2 sites), Dickinson (2 sites), O’Brien, Cherokee (2 sites), Pocahontas (2 sites), Fayette, Winneshiek, Clay, Sioux, Hancock.

Narrative
NRCS description: Moderately long-lived perennial forb that grows 1 to 4 feet tall from a round, fiber-covered corm. Each plant carries one to a few unbranched stalks. The stem is downy and bears rough, narrow, linear leaves that are one-half to three-fourths of an inch wide. The leaves are alternate and often have resinous dots on them. Twenty to forty small tubular rose-purple flowers are packed tightly in a head surrounded by a three-quarter inch sessile cup of rounded bracts. There could be few to 150 of these heads on the stalk. They bloom in order from top downward from August to October. The seed is an achene, one-fourth of an inch long, with a longer attachment of hairs (pappus). Reproduces by vegetatively or by seed.

Pedigree
Description:
Northern Iowa Germplasm was developed by bulking samples followed by a regeneration cycle executed at the University of Northern Iowa Tallgrass Prairie Center where plots were separated via distance of circa 1,500 feet from other Liatris aspera plots. Germplasm was regenerated again at the USDA Elsberry Plant Materials Center in Elsberry, Missouri following the same isolation protocol of 1,500 feet. Original seed was collected from remnant prairies in the northern one-third of counties in Iowa.
