Associated species: Sagebrush scrub. Associated with Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, Tetradymia tetrameres, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus and Achnatherum hymenoides.
Comment: Shrub, height 0.3 to 1.5 meters. Older stems are woody, while newer stems are red. Stems branch frequently, & become spine-like with age. Leaves are clustered & deciduous, elliptic to oblanceolate, finely serrate. Fruits 10-14mm, spherical, densely hairy.
