Environment description: Oak-pine mixed deciduous forest, mesic woods. Pinus tabuliformis national nature preserve. Along trail at top of steep gorge/crest of ravine. 80 degree slope with a northern aspect. Thin, rocky soil.
Associated species: Acer davidii, A. ginnala, A. truncatum, Carpinus, Cornus bretschneideri, Pinus tabuliformis, Quercus liaotungensis, Sorbus discolor, Syringa, and Viburnum.
Comment: Collected from several plants.

Tall, leggy shrub. 3 meters in height. Leaves opposite, ovate, finely serrate margins, purple-red fall color. Beautiful pink capsules of fruit, opening with orange seeds.
