Narrative
Habitat notes: growing on a dry upland slope above a shale outcrop in part shade; growing in association with Carya glabra, Pinus rigida, Viburnum prunifolium, Cornus florida, Crataegus sp., Quercus stellata, Quercus prinoides, Prunus serotina, Viburnum rafinesquianum, Antennaria virginica, Quercus ilicifolia, Solidago caesia, Rhus aromatica and several grasses. Plant description: multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with scraggly spreading habit and thorny branches. Height: about 2.5m; D.B.H.: 2.5 to 3.5 cm; Bark: grayish brown and roughened. Fruit: bluish-black (1 cm diameter) with pedicel (2 cm. long) borne singly or in 2's in axillary branches.
