Narrative
Development of the dorsal dehiscence zone is delayed 1 to 3 weeks and the placenta fails to separate from the calyx tube. Twenty to 30% of the seed produced was lost to shattering in a field trial at Corvallis, OR; seed of wildtype lines lost 70-100% to shattering.

Open-pollinated Cuphea viscosissima x C. lanceolata f. silenoides population developed from one cycle of recurrent mass selection and two generations of inbreeding and selection for reduced seed shattering in the VL-50 population.
