Narrative
Tree low chilling with early bud break and abundant pollen, very sensitive to walnut blight. Nuts stubby, somewhat small, round, crackable by hand. Flavor and quality excellent. Originated and first propagated by Joseph Sexton of Santa Barbara. Derived from a purchased seed lot probably from Chile in San Francisco during 1867. This variety formed the basis for most of the early orchards in southern California. Lit. Ref: Smith, Ralph E. 1912. Walnut Culture in California Walnut Blight. University of California Bulletin 231:171-175,318.
