Environment description: Growing in open full sun site in rocks with soils between; very well-drained; growing 5 meters above the stream in association with Syringa pekinensis, Philadelphus sp., Rhamnus sp. and Clematis sp.
Comment: Deciduous, upright, multi-stemmed shrub with more than 10 stems to 2.5 meters tall and 1 meter wide; leaves oblanceolate, 2 to 3cm long; fruit is an elongate capsule with prominent lenticels; fruit is 1 to 1.5cm long and 0.2 to 0.4 cm wide.

Received as Syringa patula. Reidentified as Syringa villosa by Dr. William Hess, Curator of the Herbarium, The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, Illinois. [Note: the prominent lenticels seen on the fruits point to S. pubescens, not S. villosa, as the likely ID for this material; according to the Flora of China, the capsules of S. villosa are smooth or nearly so. Emily Johnson checked our three living plants at South Farm on 4/13/2023 when they were flowering and confirmed that they are S. pubescens subsp. patula, not S. villosa. -SBL]
