Environment description: Growing on an east-northeast facing slope in the base of a valley where soil has settled between rocks; in association with Spiraea sp., Caragana sp., Syringa sp., Philadelphus sp., Fraxinus sp., Clematis sp. and numerous herbaceous plants.
Comment: Deciduous, multi-stemmed, upright, stiff shrub to 2.5 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide; large stems are up to 2.5 cm in diam; some terminal leaves showing maroon to red color; exposed fruits on sunny side of plants producing reddish color.
