Observation Data Added:
The original 1995-collected seeds, harvested from 105 wild plants, have more pitted seeds = C. BER. The seeds from a 2019 increase are more C. ALB, less pitted and with sharper angled margins, but also with some pitted seeds. The 2019 seeds are also rubbed harder than the original seeds, so the pericarp traits are obscured making direct comparison difficult. In 2019 when the seeds were increased, we planted 600 of the original seeds but harvested from 5 plants, apparently inadvertently selecting for off-type C. ALB. I (David Brenner) think this happened because of poor seed dormancy breaking methods at the time. The 2023 seed increase from plants selected for Chenopodium berlandieri traits is expected to solve the problem with a true to type seed increase. 09 Dec 2022.
Observation Data Added:
In the winter of 2023, 34 plants of PI 595315 were grown (row 851) from the original 1995 seed lot and were harvested separately from one greenhouse isolation tent. Close-up images of some of the leaves are posted with the accession. The single-plant seed harvests were examined under a microscope in January 2024 to confirm taxonomic matching with Chenopodium berlandieri, because C. berlandieri has a distinctive honeycomb pitted pericarp and seems to be mixed with C. album in the original seeds. Twenty-one of the plants had appropriate pitted pericarps, their diameters varied between 1.3 and 1.8 mm. The style bases were not yellow, so they conform to variety bushianum as described in the Flora of North America. The 13 rejected plants could also be C. berlandieri since there could be variability for the traits and vigorous seed cleaning may have rubbed of enough of the pericarp to make identification uncertain. The 2023 seed increase is verified as taxonomically consistent and should be favored for future seed increases. 30 Jan 2024.
