Environment description: Soil well-drained stony loam. Annual precipitation of 14 to 16 inches.
Associated species: Associated native vegetation: scattered Gambels oak and cliff rose, mountain big sagebrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, needle-and-thread and arrowleaf balsamroot.

Narrative
Cool-season perennial herbacious native legume with multiple stems, 1 to 2 feet tall, emerging from a woody crown. Leaves alternate, odd-pinnate with from 11 to 31 elliptic leaflets, gland-dotted and highly variable in size, shape, and hairiness. Inflorescence an elongated, loosely arranged raceme with few to several showy pink flowers. Blooming begins late June, continuing through the summer season. Fruit matures into a flattened, constricted, chainlike pod. Recommended for use on rangeland, mined land, critical areas and to improve upland wildlife habitats. Can be used for beautification and diversity in areas of low maintenance and low precipitation. Best adapted to well-drained, rocky, gravelly, and sand clay loam soils where annual precipitation ranges from 12 to 18 inches.
