Narrative
Accession registered as
ARS-2936
(Rumbaugh et al. 1993). The excellent vegetative spread by rhizomes and the relatively high palatability were the primary reasons for selection as a superior ecotype. This accession included in a Kimberly, Idaho field trial yielded twice as much forage when compared to the other
S. coccinea
accession (RP 40). The low stature, attractive foliage and flower colors, drought and heat tolerance, and spreading growth habit of this accession will be of benefit for permanent plantings along highways and in perennial gardens. This germplasm qualifies for the Selected Class according to the Utah Crop Improvement Association, the official seed certifying agency for Utah. Seeds of this accession were originally harvested from a native stand in northern Idaho in 1987 and increased by isolation in a field plot established near Logan, Utah in 1990.
