Developed and released for production in Montana and other northern Great Plains states to offer a safflower oil with a high purity of linoleic acid for the food, livestock nutrition, and industrial-use markets. Fatty acid composition of safflower oil at Sidney, MT during 1986-1991 period averaged 84.2% linoleic acid, 7.1% oleic acid, 1.9% stearic acid, and 5.4% palmitic acid. Classified as medium-late in maturity (121-130 days). Flower color yellow in the bud and full bloom stages. Upon drying, flower is predominantly yellow with a rare red wilted plant (less than 0.001%) Plants have spines on the tip and along the margins of the leaves and involucral bracts. Plant height under irrigated conditons average 51 cm. Under dryland conditions, average 38 cm. Moderate resistance to Alternaria leaf spot and Pseudomonas bacterial blight. Exhibits drought / thrip tolerance on a dryland site near Sidney, MT in 1989. Seeds purple-striped except when high moisture and rainfall conditions occur during seed maturation when seeds may appear brown-striped. In dryland trials at Sidney, MT during 1989-1995 period, average seed yield of 1,264 kg/ha-1 with a test weight of 31.4 kg/h1-1 and a seed oil content of 41.9% as measured by NMR. In irrigated trials at Sidney, MT during the 1989-1995 period, produced a seed yield of 2.828 kg/ha-1, a test weight of 30.2 kg/h1-1, and a seed oil content of 43.5%.
