Narrative
Originally this species was selected from the Chinese seedlot. The species name means "various-leaved", referring to the two leaf shapes, oval-rounded with acuminate apex and abruptly acuminate, which are commonly found on the same shrub. The species is widely distributed in Manchuria and Korea where for centuries people have harvested them for the local market and used them for food and oil. It can be found both as understory shrub and in vast solid stands. The species have adapted to a wide range of conditions, including temperatures as low as -480C, annual rainfall ranges of 300-1,100 millimeters, and soil pH ranges of 5.4 to 8.0. The species thrives on neutral or slightly acid soils rich in organic matter. It is a source of many desirable traits, including winter hardiness, precocity, productivity, and early maturity. The species can also be used as rootstock for Corylus avellana in Korea and China. The varieties sutchuenensis and yunnanensis are well recognized. The nuts are hard-shelled, relatively good flavor, can be eaten raw, and occur in clusters of one to three. They are enclosed in bell-shaped, slightly glandular husks that are slightly longer than the nut. The leaves, very distinguished, are variegated, with a deep carmine, heart-shaped spot at the center.
