Narrative
Corylus colurna is a Turkish hazelnut. It was first introduced from Turkey into Europe by Clusius in 1582. It has been a popular ornamental tree in Europe ever since. This species is used mainly as a specimen tree in lawns, for group planting in parks, or as avenue trees in rows. The tree is attractive with dark green foliage in the spring and summer and turning golden-yellow in autumn. Even in the winter the tree is handsome because the intricate branches are loaded with tassel-like, drooping clusters of male catkins. The species is quick growing and has proven to be quite hardy under the climatic conditions of central and northern Europe. It can be propagated by hardwood cuttings or by layering of the suckers. Under favorable conditions, the layers will produce several upward shoots and sufficient fibrous root systems by the following December.
