Narrative

Description: There is no record of the first introduction of this cultivar into the United States. However, one of the oldest trees known is reported to be growing on the Patten Experimental Farm at Charles City, Iowa. It is thought that the seed came from a sea captain returning from China. Upon returning to Philadelphia the captain gave the seed to Mr. Collins of the John Collins and Son's Nursery at Morristown, New Jersey. It is at this nursery that Mr. Charles Patten of Iowa obtained the Hansen Siberian Pear tree.

In the United States, the wild type of this pear is highly resistant to blight. It is however, a slow grower. Its fruit is greenish, roundish elliptical, egg-shaped or reverse egg-shape. It is also very cold hardy, having known to endure temperatures as low as minus forty degrees.
