Narrative
BP-3 (PI 541971) - A standard, precocious pear rootstock clone from South Africa. Grown from seed from a wild Pyrus communis tree at Elsenburg collected in 1928; selected by A.F. de Wet at the Fruit and Fruit Technology Research Institute, Stellenbosch, South Africa in 1930 from a population of 100 seedlings due to its vigorous growth. Released in 1979. Protected by South Africa Plant Breeders Rights. BP-3 gives a standard size tree producing larger crops than on seedling rootstocks. Difficult to propagate from stool beds or from hardwood cuttings without bottom-heat. Adaptable to various soil types, sandy loam to clay loams. Slightly better production than trees on BP-2. - Brooks and Olmo Register of Fruit and Nut Varieties
