Narrative

Pyrus pyrifolia (hybrid?). Collector number K-31 (Korea 31). Seeds collected in the wild by M.N. Westwood on 7 September, 1981 in the mountains near Cheongju, Korea. Coarse granite soil, pH 4-5, steep slope, elevation 340 m. Lowest temp about -20C. Medium tree to 12 m., leaves setose serrate, large. Fruit russet skin, deciduous calyx, 5 carpels, size 3.0 to 3.5 cm. diam. Possibly pollinated from tree K-30 (seed from K-30 = CPYR 1). Original sample 92 seeds. -- J. Postman, 2006, from M.N.
