Narrative
This seedlot, received from M. Westwood in 1983, carries the same B number (B-37552) as PI 541718 which was wild collected in China. This seedlot is presumed to be open pollinated seed collected in Oregon, from a seedling or seedlings of the original seedlot. Ten seedlings of PI 541737 were grown from this seed accession in 2004. The young seedlings are variable, some with lobed juvenile leaves typical of P. betulifolia, others with non-lobed juvenile leaves. Five seedlings were selected on 6/20/2005 to be planted in the field to perpetuate this accession. These seedlings could be back-crossed to PYR 648.001 (clone of PI 541718) which is presumably their parent if it is desired to concentrate the genes from the original accession. Five seedlings from this same seedlot were grown out in 1989 at NCGR and later discarded because they were not P. betulifolia. - jp 6-20-2005
