Narrative
Seed collected in Russia by John R. Magness on July 31, 1958 in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountins a few miles from Pyatigorsk, which is about midway between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. In a letter to M. Westwood written on 27 December, 1962 Magness wrote 'Pear trees in the area were quite abundant, some very large with trunks 2 feet in diameter and 35 to 40 feet tall. Fruit was 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter, very gritty and hard. It is probable that these trees are the native species that have contributed to our P. communis varieties. I do not have the exact records of elevation, but it was probably under 1000 meters.'
