Ma Shu Shang's (Northwestern University in Xion) description: 'The wild trees scattered in the mountains in northern Shaanxi (including Huang Ling County). The fruits are picked and the seeds collected by local farmers, who sale the dried seeds to the nurseryman.' -- email from John Wells, Hood River Grower Shipper Association, 11/2003.

Survives -35 F in Alberta, Canada

Pyrus betulifolia (Du Li) native to Shanxi Province forest/mountain region. This material was collected about 38 degrees N latitude and 106 degrees east longitude in mountainous regions that drop to 40 degrees celsius in winter. elevation 2000 meters(?). Received 3.6 oz of seed (about 3600 seed).
