Narrative
Stephanie (M24) has typical plant habit of most well-known American vine cantaloupes. Vines strong with normal internode length. Leaf blades dark green and pubescent; the third leaf not lobed but all young leaves are shallowly lobed. Monoecious having pistillate and staminate flowers instead of the perfect and staminate flowers found on andromonoecious plants. Immature fruit dark green in color, smooth and not mottled or spotted. When fruit approach full size, medium to heavy, coarse, and shallow netting develops and eventually covers entire surface. Unique sandy-green rind color at full maturity with a touch of orange. Mature fruit usually large (18 x 17 cm l x d) and round with no ribbing or sutures; small cavity (67 mm), tight and dry; orange flesh thick and firm. Blossom end and stem scar are small, normally 1.4 cm and 1.2 cm, respectively. A good shipper type. Fruit absciss (slip) from their peduncles when overripe. Matures about the same time as ‘Delicious 51’ which is one of the earliest varieties under West Coast conditions. Approximately 12 days earlier than ‘Top Mark’. Exhibited some tolerance to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis race 2 in greenhouse test.
