Narrative
Walnut 142 rootstock paradox. Information recorded in Plant Introduction Booklet: 'Gibridnyj'. Hardy; resistant to late spring frost; short growth period. Hardy. Average nut weight 12.12 grams; kernel output 51.3 percent; sugar content 2.3 percent; oil content 69.2 percent. Chico source tree of DJUG 142 was evaluated in the 1969 timeframe with the following results: Medium yield; Midseason harvest; 31mm diameter; Franquet shape; Good separation of kernel; Good shell seal; 55 percent kernel; Kernel weight 5.6 grams. Light amber kernel. Chico source tree of DJUG 156 was evaluated in the 1969 timeframe with the following results: Low yield; Late season harvest; 36mm diameter; Payne shape; Good separation of kernel; Good shell seal; 49 percent kernel; Kernel weight 8.0 grams; Light amber kernel. Chico source tree of DJUG 157 was evaluated in the 1969 timeframe with the following results: Low yield; Midseason harvest; 42mm diameter; Payne shape; Good separation of kernel; Shell seal unknown; 68 percent kernel; Kernel weight 6.8 grams; Light amber kernel. Chico source tree of DJUG 196 was evaluated in the 1969 timeframe with the following results: Medium yield; Early harvest; 34mm diameter; Payne shape; Very good separation of kernel; Good shell seal; 59 percent kernel; Kernel weight 8.1 grams; Light amber kernel. Per Sadovodstvo (see citation): "Gibridnyj is alleged to be Juglans x Carya, but is clearly Juglans regia."
