Duplicate of prior introduction Q26692 (CPYR 2979) from same source. 'Tama' was selected in 1971 from the hybrid seedlings between 'Gion' and 'Kosui' crossed in 1963. Tree is moderately vigorous, healthy and rather open in growth habit. 'Tama' has viable female and male gametes, yet there is cross-incompatibility between 'Tama' and other varieties, that is, 'Kosui ' and 'Sinsui' are cross-incompatible with 'Tama'. However 'Nijusseiki' 'Chojuro' and 'Hosui ' etc., are fully compatible with 'Tama'. 'Tama' ripens early in Japanese pear maturity season. The fruits ripen in early to late August at Tachikawa JAPAN. They are large in size for fruits of the earlier ripening variety, about 300 g in weight, and skin color is light brown. Sugar content of the flesh is as high as 12 to 13 in brix index. 'Tama' certainly has 'Kosui' blood in it, as the shape of fruit and the quality of flesh testify, while the robust leaves and the habit of bearing flower buds approach to 'Gion'. --K. Ashikawa, 1973
