Environment description: Terraced river valley in mountains. Corn, pear trees.
Comment: Fruit said to be hard, and fit for donkey food. The harvest texture of all pears in this region. At least 3 different pears were called 'Kharnak'. This clone may be different from Kharnak II (T&B 880729) and Kharnak III (T&B 880731).

Pyrus sp. 'Kharnak I' (donkey pear). Scions collected from cultivated tree by M. Thompson and D. Brenner on 24 November, 1988 in Pakistan (Northwest Frontier, Swat District) in village of Gulmera (about 20 km NE of Mingora). Tree is growing on the farm of Riaz Bacha, in a river valley at 1077 m elevation; Latitude 34 48' N, Longitude 72 27' E. Collectors note: Fruit said to be hard, and fit for donkey food. The hardest texture of all pears in this region. At least 3 different pears were called 'Kharnak' . This clone may be different from 'Kharnak II' and 'Kharnak III'. - Collection notebook, 1988.
