Narrative
Pyrus sp. 'Shoghori II'. The name refers to its origin in the village of Shoghor in Chitral. Scions collected from cultivated tree by M. Thompson and D. Brenner on 6 November, 1988 in Pakistan (Northern Areas, Gilgit District) on the grounds of the Ex-Mir of Hunza's Palace. In a river valley at 2314 m elevation; Latitude 36 20' N, Longitude 74 40' E. Collectors note 'May be the same as Shoghori I. This is the best pear in Pakistan! Leaves and fruit are typical Pyrus pyrifolia. Fruit is pyriform, medium-large size, firm, crisp, sweet and juicy; very long storage (several months). May be good enough for direct use (in U.S.), stone cells fairly prominent, but overall quality may compensate for this weakness.' - Collection notebook, 1988.
