Narrative

One of a number of containers of teosinte seed donated by Dr. H. Iltis believed to be remnants of a program to create a temperate flowering teosinte. The program started by making a hybrid of Zea mays subsp. mexicana Race Nobogame and Gaspe Flint Maize. This was brought into cultivation by gradually moving it northward from Texas to Boston and Chicago by W. Galinat and G. Beadle. The goal was to produce a temperate flowering teosinte that would flower at northern latitudes. The label on the seed container reads: "Seed selected from 2452 best. Grown in isolation block north of U of C greenhouse. Good isolation. Bulk: 100 selected." This notation would appear to indicate that this accession may have best met the standards of the project.
