Narrative
This accession segregates for leaf color traits especially dramatic spots in the leaf blade centers that are unusual distinct and interesting. They could be useful someday in ornamental or vegetable amaranths. See the images and descriptor data from 2024 for more detail. The seeds are brown, flowers dark pink, leaves variegated. The RRC class type is: unique. The leaves are amaranthine with dark green markings. The plants are bushy and there were two taller, unbranched segregates. It resembles RRC 1191. Description:
There are two similar accessions: PI 706362 (RRC 1154) and PI 633592 (RRC 1191) were both collected by the Andrew Tucker in Colima, Mexico and were donated to the Rodale Research Center at about the same time. They look similar and may come from the same population. They are separate historically and because PI 706362 has some diverse unusual mixed types and PI 633592 is more uniform for the main type. The main type has red leaves with a V marking in the center of the blade and PI 706362 segregates for later flowering plants and for off-type taller plants with spots in the center of the leaf blade but consists mostly of the main type.
