Narrative
Six plants presented by the NA from seed collected in Japan. Deciduous shrub to 3 meters with slender gray-brown spreading branches. Leaves membranous, ovate, elliptic or oblong, 1-4 cm long, 7-25 cm wide, acute or sometimes obtuse, rounded to acute at base. Panicles very much reduced, racemose, few flowered, headlike, the axis 3-8 meters long, thinly pilosulous. Calyx glabrous. Corolla 2-8 mm long. Filaments very short, anthers about 2.5 mm long. Styles slender, 3.0-3.5 mm long. Fruit globose, about 7 mm across, purple-black. Native to the mountains of Japan. USDA Zone 4.
