Type = Ampelopsis. Per Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs, p. 617: "Vigorous climber; young brts. hairy: lvs. broad-ovate, 6-12 cm. long, acuminate, cordate, 3-lobed, the lateral lobes broadly triangular-ovate, spreading, coarsely serrate, dark green above, lighter beneath and pilose; petioles as long as blade or shorter, hairy: cymes on pilose stalks 1.5-3.5 cm. long: fr. 6-8 mm. across, changing from pale lilac to verdigris color and finally to bright blue, rarely whitish. [...] Particularly handsome in fall with its strikingly colored. Rehd., var. Brts. and lvs. glabrous or glabrescent: lvs. more deeply 3-5-lobed, with rounded sinuses; peduncles longer. [...] Lvs. usually smaller, variegated with white and greenish white and tinged pink while young. [...] A form with more deeply 5-lobed lvs., the middle lobe and sometimes the lateral lobes sinuately lobed or toothed with wide sinuses and much constricted near base and middle."
