Environment description: Cultivated field. Island is rocky and high. It does not freeze, despite altitude, except along the shore during June, July, and August. This micro-climate is one of the few areas around the lake where corn can be grown.
Comment: 3 ears obtained from Alejandro Flores Huatta. Lat/lon accurate for Estanciasuyo.

Narrative
This corn has probably not been altered for hundreds of years due to the relative isolation of the island until recent years. Small corn, adapted to the severe climate and altitude. Resistant to diseases. Enemies include birds, mice, insects, and hail. It grows to a height of about 3 feet. There is one crop a year, since there is no water for irrigation. Fields are small terraced plots, plowed with oxen or the ancient foot plow, the same as used by their ancestors, the Incas. Natural fertilizer is used, and recently commercial fertilizers have been used. After fields are cultivated a few years, they "rest" for one to two years. Often during rest, fields are used for grazing of sheep and oxen, which helps to fertilize. Probably planted in October or November, 1978 and harvested in March or April, 1979. Plant description: Stalk--grows to a height of about 5 feet; ears (originally received): #1 -- 3.6 x 7 cm. (yellow); #2 -- 4.2 x 5.5 cm (yellow); #3 -- 4.5 x 6 cm. (Rust).
