Narrative
Sara has been selected from a cross made already in 1971. The mother was the Fragaria x vescana hybrid 'Annelie'[(Valentine x F vesca 4X)] open pollination) and the father was another F x vescana (Sparkle x F vesca 4X),open pollination.Sara is an improvement of Annelie both in yield and berry size. At Balsgard Sara has been planted in three trials, under the selection number F78103, in comparison with Annelie. These trials have been harvested for three years each.Both Sara and Annelie have a strong vigour and dense and upright growth habit and produce a lot of runners. They are slightly susceptible to powdery mildew but Sara usually does not show any visible mildew on the berries that sometimes Annelie has. In these trials no fungicides are used.The fruit texture is rather soft. At Balsgard Sara has had a better vesca like flavour than Annelie. The berries are red to brick red and easily decapped. The first fruits are kidney shaped, later more round to conical. Ripening season is early, even a day or two earlier than Zefyr.Neither Sara nor Annelie is much attacked by grey mould on the fruits at harvest but perhaps Sara is the better variety. Also at the petiole base Sara usually has less grey-mould than Annelie.
