Narrative
Comments: Produces trees 25-35% the size of seedling rootstocks. Used in high-density orchards. Trees precocious and productive. Also used as interstem. In stoolbeds, roots fairly well; hardwood cuttings difficult to root. Roots are brittle; trees require support. Suckering is a problem. Susceptible to fire blight. Several subclones exist. Most widely used dwarfing apple rootstock. (Received about 1920.)

Description:
In 1913, R.G. Hatton collected, observed, classified & sel- ected apple rootstocks then in commerce in Europe..assigned the Malling 9 name to a dwarfing rootstock (selected as a chance seedling in 1879 in France, called "Jaune de Metz").
