Narrative
Chance seedling of eastern black walnut. The nut is medium in size with 27 nuts per pound. Sparrow ripens uniformly and turns yellow as it ripens. It also falls uniformly, shortly after ripening and is easy to hull. It appears to have resistance to husk maggot because it is later maturing than most native walnuts and avoids most of the egg laying period of the husk fly. Thin shell, cracking quality good, cracks out 29.94 percent kernel with 96 percent unbroken quarters. Ripens two weeks before Thomas. Kernel sweet, rich, bright and has a good eating quality. Tree retains foliage well into the fall, later than older cultivars. Leaves resistant to anthracnose. Tree considered hardy. Lateral bearing. At Lincoln, NE, in 1987, shed pollen April 26-May 6, flower receptive May 6-10. In 1990, pollen shed May 12-18, flower receptive May 24-28. Burson, Cranz, Davidson, or Hare would make good pollinator trees. Nut is small unless tree is well grown and on a good site. Observed and charted by W.A. Gustafson and Todd M. Morrissey at Southeast Research and Extension Center, Lincoln, NE in 1989 in comparison of protandry (Type I)/protogyny (Type II) and adequated cross pollination with the follwing results: April 27 to May 3 - pollen shedding (one of the earliest).
